Preferences

When you play LGGWG, you are sending moves to the Servinator, which is the program at lggwg.com that manages your game. Many of these preference items deal with how the LGGWG client communicates with the Servinator.

  • Email (for bounced mail): If you are using LGGWG’s built-in email sender, you need to have a return address. If for whatever reason your mail doesn’t reach the Servinator, you’ll get it sent back to this address. (Go ahead, fill it out. We didn’t build this whole game so we could get your email address!) This does not have to be the same address as your team’s email address—-it’s just for bounces.
  • Team name: This is your team name. If you don’t know your team’s name, you should go to lggwg.com and get a free LGGWG account.
  • Default servinator address: Don’t screw around with this until told otherwise. Generally, the client comes with this set correctly already. However, you can always get the Servinator address off lggwg.com if your Servinator mail isn’t getting answered.
  • Upload to LGGWG server: (not shown) This is the default, and unless you have problems with visiting websites, you should probably just leave choose this. If you want an alternate route (you can’t contact http://lggwg.com normally), you can use SMTP or Save to File.
  • Mail type: If you want to use the LGGWG client’s built-in emailer, set this to “SMTP” (it stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). If you want to send your files in yourself, choose “Save to file”.

NOTE: If you send files to the Servinator, send them as attachments, and put “LGGWG:” in the subject. No, really.

  • Mail server: If you are using SMTP, you need to say what server sends your mail. In this case, it’s mail.earthlink.net. Usually the mail server is something like this (mail.mydomain.com), but sometimes it isn’t. Check your current mail client’s options and see where your mail goes.
  • Load folder: This is where your outgoing move files get saved. It is also the default directory you see when you hit “Load” from the main page. This defaults to ”./”, which means whereever you installed LGGWG. However, if you want to point it at another place, like your desktop or your mail attachments folder, go ahead.
  • Animation Scale: If your Green Guys are moving too fast or too slow, you can set this at any time to speed up or slow down the animation. 1.0 is the standard speed; here, we’ve set it to 0.7 to speed things up a little.
  • See warnings about illegal movement or firings: The client doesn’t know if your orders will go as planned (all plans fail to survive contact with the enemy!), but it will pop up warning dialogs if you give orders that seem obviously wrong. If you turn this off (as we have), those orders will appear white but won’t get you a warning.
  • See instructional messages for new players:The Head Executive’s years as an educational software designer leave him with a fetish for pop-up dialogs that explain what each screen does. Check this box if you don’t want introductions to various screens.

You can read more about how to play LGGWG in the rulebook.
